Internal Linking

Internal linking within a web site can mean a few things. Internal links play a crucial part in making sure that all the pages in a site are crawled and indexed by Google and providing lots of relevant content for the search engines and for your site visitors.

Benefits of Internal Linking

Indexed Internal Pages

As soon as you start internally linking pages within content on your site, you may notice the increase of index pages in search engines, and these pages becoming entry pages directly from the search engines. Getting more inbound links to these internally linked pages will also increase your overall Page Rank.

Increase Page Views

Linking to more relevant content within your website will increase your page view. The more relevant content you present the user the more pages they will view and the longer they will spend on your site. If you look at YouTube as an example, any video that you watch on YouTube is followed by other related videos to that of what you first viewed. This ensures hours and hours of time wasting on YouTube. Trust me I know this from experience.

Increase time spent on site

Keeping the users on your site will also increase the time spent on your web site. This is obvious as the user is now looking at more pages on your site. The more time the user so ends on your site the more likely that they will eventually click on one of your Google Ads or other paid ad spots.

Increase rate of return

Brand awareness is another bi-product of keeping users on your site. The longer a user stays on your site the more likely they are going to remember the site that they are on. If it contains good relevant content then they’ll come back.

Good Internal Linking Practises

There are several main ways of internal linking of relevant content within a site. The two most common methods of internal linking include lists of relevant content listed by tags and the other by internal content linking using particular keywords in content for linking.

Linking internally on a website using both of these methods is highly recommend.

On this particular blog you may notice the in content links in all of the articles. Other features that you may notice are the tag clouds in the site’s menu and relevant content links below the article. All of these help with providing the users of your site with lots of related and relevant content.

All of the articles on the site are tagged with particular key terms that are relevant to the content in the article. This way other articles tagged with the same keywords may be displayed.
