Contributing to a Community and Giving Back!

Posted in: Joomla | No Comments » Posted: Sep, 22, 2011

Giving back to the community Over the years of using Joomla! I’ve always wanted and tried to give back in some way. There are so many ways of giving back to the community and I have to say I think I’ve tried them all now. From meetups, donations, coding, writing extensions and plugins all the way to just talking about and sharing my passion for the CMS.

Posted in: Joomla | No Comments » Posted: Aug, 19, 2011

Joomla 1.7Today marks the day when Joomla 1.6 is no longer supported for patches and updates by the Joomla team.

This doesn’t mean that your Joomla site will no longer work but rather it is time to upgrade to Joomla 1.7.

The Joomla projects new faster release development plan for Joomla has seen many changes over the last 8 months since the first initial release of Joomla 1.6 back in January. Furthermore the latest release will soon reach end of life when Joomla 1.8 is release early next year in January 2012.

Last month we received a bit of a response back from our template that we released for creating a custom Facebook landing page for fan page controlled by Joomla. The template itself is fairly simple and is basically optimised to look and feel right on a 520 px wide canvas that Facebook allow you to work with.

You can download and find out more about the template from our previous post on the fUser Template.

The biggest bit of feedback was, ahem, then lack of setup tutorial. So that is what this is. The rest of this post will take you through a step by step guide to help you setup and customised the fUser template for your website.

Facebook fUser Template for JoomlaIntroducing the fUser template!

If you have a Joomla powered website and Facebook Fan page, it can me sometimes time consuming to mange the content on the Facebook fan page as well as on your Joomla website. Not to mention all of the other social networks that your business might be tied into.

With a little bit of configuration on a Facebook application for your website and a little more setup on your Joomla website, you can have a fully functional and feature rich Facebook fan page powered directly from your Joomla website.

fUser Template is a very simple base template that is easily customisable. It uses a common grid layout system called 520 grid from 520grid.com. Inspired by WebDesignerWall.com, the 520 template fits perfectly into the canvas area of a Facebook fan page. I have to add, that this customises the look and feel of landing pages of your Fan page.

Joomla 1.6 Redirect Log and Anti Hack

Posted in: Joomla | 2 Comments » Posted: Jul, 2, 2011

One area in Joomla 1.6 that I’ve written about awhile ago is the new Joomla Redirect component that comes with the new Joomla 1.6. Its a great little extension that picks up 404 errors and allows you to safely redirect them to the correct area in your website. It usually helps with search engine optimisation and also your web site users. Everyone hates landing on 404 pages.

Now, I have to admit that it has been a little while since I’ve looked at the redirect log on any of our Joomla 1.6 website but I just had a little peak into one a few minutes ago and noticed a huge list of automated hacking attempts! All coming from the same location over the course of a few days and then repeated attempts a few months later.
